I’m sure most of us can remember the first time we tried VR, before we had friends and a community (in VR). I love the immersive, interactive, and social experiences that VR offers but making connections and friends in VR can be challenging, even for the most social of social butterflies. For the less outgoing among the community and newcomers to VR, this could even seem daunting initially. That’s why I decided to write this post to share some tips on how to socialize in VR, based on my personal experiences.
One of the challenges with socializing and meeting people in VR, especially for newcomers, is finding social activities to meet people at and break the ice. You may not know yet where the clubs, parties, and fun events are in VR. That’s why we’ve put together some useful links to VR event calendars for Horizon Worlds and VR Chat, and we will continue to update this to add more calendars and platforms. I’ve met a lot of great people by going to VR events, parties, and spending hours talking, laughing and dancing with people. Despite the disparaging headlines in opinion pieces, VR is pretty lively. Start going to events consistently and you may run into some familiar names, don’t be afraid to add people you click with as friends!
A key thing to remember in VR is that you have the power and right to control your own experience. You don’t have to tolerate behavior that makes you feel uncomfortable so utilize the mute or block features of the platform to prevent unwanted interactions. By doing this, you will be able to protect your peace and focus on having a positive and enjoyable time in VR.
Do you have any tips or advice when it comes to socializing in VR? We’d love to hear from the other members of the community in the comments!
